Berks Catholic is beaten by Bishop McDevitt in District 3 Class 4A football semifinal

Freshman quarterback Stone Saunders threw four touchdowns passes to lead Bishop McDevitt to a 35-7 win over Berks Catholic in a District 3 Class 4A semifinal Friday at Rocco Ortenzio Stadium in Harrisburg.

The top-seeded Crusaders (10-1) led 21-7 at the half after outgaining the fourth-seeded Saints 290-61.

Saunders threw a 56-yard pass to Kamil Foster and a 27-yarder to Mario Easterly for touchdowns in the first quarter to make it 14-0.

Josiah Jordan intercepted Saunders on the first play of the second quarter to set up his 29-yard TD run that cut it to 14-7.

Saunders connected with Easterly from 13 yards to make it 21-7 at halftime.

In the second half, Rico Scott caught a 57-yard touchdown pass from Saunders with 7:52 left in the third quarter to give McDevitt a 28-7 lead.

The Saints (7-5) had chances to get back in it. Mitchell Gatz overthrew a wide-open Jordan on a third-and-long that likely would have been a touchdown.

Later, Berks Catholic drove into Crusaders territory, but Jordan fumbled and McDevitt’s Kade Werner recovered at the 42.

Marquese Williams capped the scoring on a 14-yard run with 7:59 left. The score was set up by a 44-yard pass from Saunders to Easterly.

McDevitt will host Lampeter-Strasburg, a 31-0 winner over Kennard Dale, in the championship game next Friday at 7 p.m.
