Berks churches to mark the first Sunday in Advent [Religion Digest]

• Reformation Lutheran Church, 3670 Perkiomen Ave., Exeter Township, will celebrate the first Sunday in Advent at 8:30 and 10 a.m. Masks are required. The Reformation Choir, under the direction of Dr. Heidi Rochlin, director of music, will lead worship at the later service. The 10:30 service will be livestreamed on Facebook and may be viewed later at www.Reformationlutheran.org. under worship videos. An intergenerational Advent workshop will begin at 9:30 a.m. with crafts and Advent wreath-making using fresh greens and candles. Reformation’s Advent Devotional, written by members of Reformation, will also be available.

• St. Michael’s Church, 529 St. Michaels Road, Tilden Township, will celebrate the first Sunday in Advent at 10:15 a.m. with hanging of the greens to decorate the church. Members will hang chrismons, a Christian symbol representing Jesus Christ, on the trees.

• Zion United Church of Christ and St. Paul’s United Church of Christ will worship together in-person for the first Sunday in Advent at 10:15 a.m. at 301 W. Penn Ave., Robesonia, and by YouTube, Facebook and telephone.  The first candle for Advent will be lit.  Zion will serve refreshments after the service. See 1zion.org for details.

• Christ Lutheran Church, 222 Niantic Road, Barto, will worship on the first Sunday of Advent at 9 a.m., with Holy Communion. Following the service, the fall congregational meeting will be held. Prior to the worship service, Coffee & Conversation will be held at 8:30 in the Welcome Center, and after worship there will be Coffee & Conversation as well. Adult Bible study will be held in the parlor after the congregational meeting. Masks are recommended.

• Trinity United Church of Christ, 2449 Cumberland Ave., Mount Penn, will be celebrating the first Sunday of Advent in person at 10:15 a.m. Adult church school will be held at 9 a.m. Masks are recommended. The service will also be recorded and posted on the church’s Facebook page after the service.

• Christ Episcopal Church, 435 Court St., Reading, will hold three in-person worship services, all including Holy Eucharist: at 8, there will be a said service (no music); at 9, a service for families with young children; and at 10:15, a service with music. Everyone attending these services is asked to wear a mask. Parking is available at the Abraham Lincoln parking garage and the M & T Bank lot, both off of Washington street. Parking next to the church on Court Street is available for those who are disabled or need assistance. On Thursday morning at 11, a morning prayer group based on the Book of Common Prayer will meet at the Red Bridge recreational area in Bern Township, weather permitting.

• Schwarzwald United Church of Christ, 75 Church Lane Road, Exeter Township, will be holding  an in-person and Zoom service at 10:30 a.m. It will also be available on YouTube.  Sandra Paton will be guest pianist. • Schwarzwald Lutheran Church, 250 Church Lane Road, Exeter Township, will hold an in-person service at 10:30 a.m. with Holy Communion to celebrate the first Sunday in Advent. The recorded service will be available Monday on Facebook.

• Calvary United Church of Christ, 640 Centre Ave., Reading, welcomes the Rev. Marian Shearer as its guest preacher at 8 and 10:30 a.m. worship services, both with Holy Communion, to celebrate the first Sunday in Advent, and as its Adult Forum leader at 9.

• Good Shepherd United Church of Christ, 170 Tuckerton Road, Muhlenberg Township, will gather for Faith Formation at 9 a.m. and for worship at 10:30, in-person and livestreamed on Facebook and YouTube, to celebrate the first Sunday in Advent. Masked are required in the building but may be removed while attending worship, except while singing. Orders for poinsettias, soup and luminaries are being taken through next weekend. • Reading Moravian Church, 1116 Perry St., Reading, will be celebrating the first Sunday in Advent with the lighting of the first Advent wreath candle at 10 a.m.  Masks are required and social distancing is recommended.

• Zion’s Lutheran Church, 354 Zion Church Road, Perry Township, will celebrate the first Sunday in Advent including Holy Communion at 10:30 a.m. in person and on Facebook Live.  Angel tree gifts for the Salvation Army should be returned on Sunday. Sunday school for all ages will be held at 9:30.

• Maidencreek Church, 261 Main St., Maidencreek Township, will hold a hybrid worship service celebrating the first Sunday of Advent at 9 a.m. that includes the confirmation of four students. Music includes piano solos by Amelia Rarick and Connor Rarick; piano and organ music by Kimberly Ayrton; and a congregational hymn.  In-person worship is livestreamed on Facebook and on You Tube.  Links can be found at maidencreekchurch.org.

• St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 548 Old Swede Road, Amity Township, will hold its annual Christmas bazaar on Friday from 3:30 to 8:30 p.m. and Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m., selling apple dumplings, pies, cookies, candy, chow chow, soup and lunch items (eat in or take out) fresh green wreaths, door sprays, cemetery boxes, crafts and Santa’s workshop.

• St. Thomas Church, 536 N. Main St., Bernville, will hold a Christmas bazaar and craft show next Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Homemade crafts, doll clothing, purses, ornaments, cards, cutlery, baked goods, candy, cookies, jams, soup, egg sandwiches and hot foods will be available. • St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, 5 W. Arch St., Fleetwood, will have two worship services in the sanctuary on Sunday, at 9 and 10:30 a.m. The 9 a.m. service also will be available on Facebook and YouTube; links can be found at www.stpaulsfleetwood.org. Special music will be “With Peals of Thanks and Praise” by the Bell Choir at 9 and “Star of David” by the Chancel Choir at 10:30. The hymn soloist will be Sarah Berghold. Worship leaders are Steve Wentz at 9 and Hannah Saylor at 10:30. There also will be a baptism, and new members will be welcomed.
