Berks coroner called to predawn home blaze

Berks County fire crews remain on the scene of a predawn fatal home fire in Alsace Township.

Crews were dispatched shortly before 5 a.m. for a house on fire in the 100 block of Magnolia Lane off Antietam Road, less than a mile from the former Alsace Manor Fire Company.

According to dispatches, a resident was reported to be trapped in the ranch-style home.

Firefighters made entry and found a person dead.

A tanker task force was activated among area fire companies to shuttle water to the scene. One of the filling stations was a hydrant near Reading Muhlenberg Career and Technology Center near the Spring Valley Road exit of Route 12.

Fire police directed traffic away from Antietam Road between Pricetown and Mexico roads.

The coroner’s office was called to the scene.
