Berks County businesses eligible for disaster loans in wake of Ida

Residents and businesses in the region affected by the remnants of Hurricane Ida can apply for low-interest loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Under the SBA disaster assistance program, certain homeowners, renters and business owners can apply for loans to repair or replace disaster-damaged or destroyed real estate, and to repair or replace disaster-damaged or destroyed personal property.

While Berks County was not part of the disaster declaration in the wake of a storm, SBA Economic Injury Disaster Loans are available to small businesses and most nonprofit organizations in counties adjacent to the hardest-hits areas. These include Berks, Lehigh, Lancaster, Cumberland, Dauphin and Northampton.

The SBA loans can help with losses not covered by insurance or the FEMA disaster assistance, as well as business operating expenses that could have been met had Hurricane Ida not occurred, regardless of whether any physical storm damage was sustained.

Berks County officials issued an announcement Tuesday indicating that they are continue to work with local partners to petition for the county to be included in a direct SBA declaration, which would provide a Home Disaster Loan program that could benefit homeowners and renters. At this point, Berks has not reached the threshold of damage needed for that request, so county leaders noted that it is important for everyone to report any uninsured losses from Hurricane Ida to their local government office.
