Berks man assaulted his pregnant girlfriend in front of her 2-year-old son, police say

A 19-year-old Cumru Township man was taken into custody nearly two weeks after he was accused of beating, choking and pistol-whipping his pregnant girlfriend in front of her 2-year-old son in their residence.

Ivan Perez was committed to Berks County Prison in lieu of $8,000 bail to await a hearing following arraignment Wednesday night before District Judge Priscilla Campos in Reading Central Court.

Cumru police obtained an arrest warrant for Perez on April 2 on charges of aggravated assault, strangulation and making terrorist threats. They said he fled after assaulting his girlfriend that day in the home they shared in the first block of Dairy Circle.

According to police:

Cumru police were called to the Reading Hospital emergency department about 2:30 p.m. April 3 after Perez’s girlfriend arrived for treatment. She said the assault happened about 9:30 p.m. the previous day in their residence.

The woman said she and Perez were arguing in the doorway to his bedroom and Perez forced her and her son into the room and slammed the door.

He slapped her on the right side of the head, then punched her about 10 times in the body, stomach and sides before throwing her around the room.

He grabbed her hair and struck her head on the bedroom wall twice before choking her. He picked up a handgun from a bedroom counter and struck her on the back of the head. He pointed the gun to her face, threatening to shoot her, the unborn child and her son, who was crying on the floor the entire time.

At some point Perez broke down, leaned against the wall and told her to get out, threatening to kill her if she reported the incident to police.

She went to the hospital by private vehicle the next day. Police saw bruises on her head, face and neck, scratch marks around her neck and a 2-inch laceration on the back of her head.
