A Berks County man has pleaded guilty to a crime he committed during the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol.
Anthony Nolf, 37, of Birdsboro pleaded guilty Friday in front of U.S. District Judge Beryl A. Howell to one count of civil disorder. A sentencing hearing was scheduled for January.
According to federal prosecutors, Nolf took part in an effort by rioters to overwhelm police.
Prosecutors said:
Nolf attended the “Stop to Steal” rally at The Ellipse on Jan. 6, an event where President Donald Trump spoke and reiterated claims that his election loss was due to voter fraud. Following the rally, Nolf walked the short distance to the Capitol.
There, he helped remove fencing made out of metal bike racks, then went to the Lower West Terrace Tunnel. That was the site of some of the most violent assaults on law enforcement during the riot.
Nolf saw rioters assaulting law enforcement officers in the tunnel but entered anyway. Once in the tunnel he took park in a coordinated “heave-ho” effort, where rioters simultaneously pushed themselves forward in an attempt to physically overwhelm law enforcement officers.
Nolf took part in the activity for about four minutes until officers were able to get the rioters out of the tunnel.
Nolf was arrested by the FBI on April 5. His case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and the Department of Justice National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section. Assistance was provided by the U.S. Attorney’s Offices for the District of Delaware and the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
Officials said that in the 33 months since Jan. 6, 2021, more than 1,100 people have been charged in nearly all 50 states for crimes related to the breach of the Capitol, including more than 400 people charged with assaulting or impeding law enforcement, a felony. The investigation is ongoing.
