Berks not adding a third ballot drop box

Berks County will not add a third drop box for mail ballots for the upcoming election.

The county elections board voted last week to rescind a motion approved in June to install a ballot drop box at the county’s new South Campus in Mohnton in time for the November election.

The county offers two drop boxes in the weeks leading up to an election for those wanting to hand deliver their mail ballot: one at the Berks County Services Center in downtown Reading and one at the Berks County Agriculture Center in Bern Township.

All three commissioners voted to approve the motion to add a third drop box.

However, the board voted Thursday to rescind that motion, saying it was contingent on the election department having a functioning satellite office at the Mohnton facility by the fall. That has not happened.

“It may happen in the future but, at least through this general election, we will not have election staff at the South Campus,” said Commissioner Kevin Barnhardt, chairman of the elections board. “We will obviously do our level best with respect to notifying the voters of this modification to our intention to have a third drop box.”

The commissioners said they will revisit the issue when the election staff is stationed at the building.

Polling location moved

The board also approved the temporary polling location change for voters in Reading’s 19th Ward, 1st Precinct to Christ Lutheran Church at 1301 Luzerne St. from Glenside Elementary School. Letters will be sent to registered voters in the precinct to alert them of the change.
