Berks police will be looking for impaired and aggressive drivers through Labor Day weekend

Local police will be working through Labor Day and the rest of September to take drunken and drug-impaired drivers off the road.

Expecting increased alcohol use and drivers operating under the effects of drugs, police officers across Berks County will participate in aggressive driving and DUI details in an effort to make the roads safer for travel, said Exeter Township Sgt. David Bentz, who is also Berks County coordinator for the North Central Regional DUI Enforcement Program.

That enforcement will continue through the end of September. Police will be conducting roving patrols and sobriety checkpoints.

The North Central Regional DUI Enforcement Program equips, funds and coordinates the municipal police DUI enforcement in the  Northumberland, Schuylkill, Berks, Snyder, Union, Columbia, Montour, Monroe, Clinton, Carbon, Susquehanna, Wayne, Wyoming and Pike counties.

Sobriety checkpoints and roving patrols are funded by PennDOT and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
