Berks soccer playoffs: Champions will be crowned by end of week

This is a big week in Berks County for boys and girls high school soccer.

By late Thursday night, two champions will be crowned, but first the teams playing in those title games must be decided.

That will happen Tuesday when semifinals are held in both the boys and girls BCIAA tournaments.

In the boys tournament, a new champion will be crowned after defending champion Fleetwood was knocked out of the tournament on Saturday by Muhlenberg 3-1.

The fifth-seeded Muhls (13-4) take on top-seeded and unbeaten Conrad Weiser (18-0-1) at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Conrad Weiser. The Scouts advanced with a 3-2 win over eighth-seeded Exeter.

In the other half of the bracket, second-seeded Wilson hosts third-seeded Wyomissing at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The Bulldogs (15-3-1) cruised into the semifinals with a 7-0 win over Tulpehocken, while Wyomissing (15-2) needed overtime to advance, beating Kutztown 2-1 on Drew Latourelle’s goal in extra time.

Of the four teams remaining in the tourney, Wilson was the last one to win a BCIAA title, that coming in a 4-0 win over Wyomissing in 2017.

In the girls tournament, the seedings held to form on Saturday with the top four seeds advancing, although third-seeded Wilson needed overtime to beat sixth-seeded Fleetwood, 3-2.

Junior Ellee Vicari scored the game-winner to send the Bulldogs (14-4-1) into the semifinals at second-seeded and two-time defending BCIAA champion Wyomissing at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

The Spartans (15-1-1) advanced with a 4-0 win over Hamburg.

Tuesday’s other semifinal pits fourth-seeded Exeter at top-seeded Gov. Mifflin at 7 p.m.

The Eagles (16-3) advanced with a 5-1 win over Schuylkill Valley, and the Mustangs (15-2-1) moved on with a 1-0 win over Twin Valley.

Gov. Mifflin is looking for its first girls crown since 2017.

Wilson and Wyomissing have each won the title three times in last six years, with Spartans winning in 2020, 2022 and 2023, and the Bulldogs winning in 2018, 2019 and 2021.

The championship matches are Thursday at a site to be determined with the boys game at 6 p.m. and the girls game at 8 p.m.
