Berks team loses opening game in Carpenter Cup

The Berks squad lost its opening game in the single-elimination Carpenter Cup 11-4 on Monday to the Inter-AC Independents.

The game was played at The Philadelphia Phillies Urban Academy Fields in FDR Park.

Inter-AC  capitalized on 10 walks and two hit batters to build a lead Berks couldn’t overcome.

The Berks team, which struggled to build interest in this year’s tournament, was short staffed in the game.

The Berks had multiple scoring opportunities but weren’t able to cash in until Wilson’s  Christo Hunsicker delivered a two out, two strike double to drive in a pair of runs.

Muhlenberg’s Kevin Rodriguez followed up Hunsicker’s double with a tough infield chopper that he beat out and caused an errant throw by the third baseman leading to two more runs for Berks.

Rodriguez also doubled for Berks in the game.

Other Berks hitters to collect a hit included: Nate Lord (Twin Valley), Jake Hafer (Exeter), Maddox Roy (Daniel Boone).

Tryouts for next year’s Carpenter Cup Team will take place early in March and will likely be held at First Energy Stadium.
