Military service: Served in the Navy from 1968 to 1971, deployed to Vietnam and the West Pacific.

Following boot camp and training at Great Lakes, Ill., was assigned to pre-commissioning detail at Norfolk, Va. In October 1968 was stationed aboard the USS New Orleans, which was assigned to San Diego, Calif., and deployed to Vietnam to serve as offshore support for the Marines. After its tour in Vietnam, the ship was assigned to the recovery of Apollo 14 on Feb. 19, 1971, which was successful.

The ship made another deployment to Vietnam and brought more than 2,000 Marines home from the war.

After his service was completed, he returned home to suburban Washington, D.C., and served as a machinist mate in the engine room, operating the propulsion plant, generating electricity and making fresh water. He also worked in the building management field as an operating engineer and for the Smithsonian Institution before retiring.

Now: Volunteers as the ship’s writer for the Reading Navy Club’s Ship 258 and as chaplain for the national staff and state squadron.
