Bishop Shannan grad wins national title in track and field, sets American record

Bishop Shanahan graduate Josh Hoey broke his own American record on Sunday in winning the 800-meter run at the U.S. Indoor Track and Field Nationals at Ocean Breeze, Staten Island, new York.

Hoey ran 1:43.24 to break the record he set earlier this month of 1:43.90 at the Millrose Games in New York City.

In Sunday’s race, Brandon Miller finished second in 1:44.26.

It is Hoey’s third American record this indoor season.

He broke the American record in 1,000-meter run at University of Pennsylvania, running 2:14.48.

Hoey, 25, finished fourth in the 800 at the Olympic Trials last summer in a time of 1:44.12.

After graduating from Bishop Shanahan, Hoey was originally committed to attend the University of Oregon, but instead turned pro.
