Bands from across the region showcased their talents at North Schuylkill Junior/Senior High School at the Tournament of Bands on Saturday, Oct. 12.
Held locally for several years at the district’s Ghosh Orthodontics Field at Spartan Stadium, the event featured performances by 14 school districts: Notre Dame Green Pond, Jim Thorpe Area, Tamaqua Area, Lake-Lehman, Mifflin County, Hazleton Area, Tri-Valley, Mahanoy Area, Shenandoah Valley, Panther Valley, Blue Mountain, Shamokin Area, Wyoming Area and North Schuylkill.
Bands were divided into four categories based on size and competition level.
The field shows featured a wide variety of musical styles, many revolving around a specific theme.

Host North Schuylkill performed “Little Monsters,” which focused on the music of Lady Gaga, with songs like “Bloody Mary,” “Shallow,” “Bad Romance” and “The Edge of Glory.” While judges tallied the scores, members of the Spartan band played for the visiting bands cheering and shouting from the stands.
Mifflin County won first place in Group 4 – Open for “Once Upon a Time: A Fateful Fairytale.”

Winning first place in the Group 3-A division, Blue Mountain’s field show featured selections from DreamWorks animated movies. The first selection featured a battle to “Kung Fu Fighting” with the Kung Fu Panda defeating the villain. A dragon flew over the band for “How to Train Your Dragon,” and “Shrek” came to the rescue for “Holding Out for a Hero.”
