Both drivers injured in head-on crash caused by medical emergency on Route 222 in northeastern Berks

A Lehigh County woman was seriously injured during the Tuesday afternoon rush when her car collided head-on with an SUV on Route 222 in Maxatawny Township, state police at Reading said.

Raya M. Khushaim, 26, of Allentown was northbound in the 15000 block of Kutztown Road, also known as Route 222, about 4:40 p.m. when she suffered a medical emergency that caused her to lose control of her car, troopers said.

The car veered across the center turn lane and into the southbound lane, colliding with an oncoming SUV driven by Randall Robbins, 65, of Turbortville, Northumberland County, troopers said.

Both drivers were taken by ambulances to Lehigh Valley Hospital, Khushaim for what were described as serious injuries and Robbins for minor injuries, troopers said.

Information on their medical conditions was unavailable.

Both lanes of Route 222 were closed while crews from the Kutztown and Topton fire companies and a towing company worked at the scene. Fire police rerouted traffic for about an hour.
