BOYERTOWN — The Boyertown Junior Woman’s Club calls on the community to donate to its 2024 Once Upon a Prom dress event that aims to help girls have a memorable prom experience.
“Many of our club members can look back with fond memories of their prom and we hope that these girls will have the same,” Danelle Matlack of the Boyertown Junior Woman’s Club said in a statement.
The Junior Woman’s Club will be collecting gently used prom or special occasion dresses through March 1. Donate clean, non-torn dresses of all sizes, both long and short, as well as purses, clutches, dress shoes, jewelry, and wraps.
Donations can be dropped off at Zuber Realty, 201 E. Philadelphia Ave., Boyertown, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“The dress is a huge part of the prom experience. The cost of dresses only seems to increase. We want to ensure that the young ladies in our local communities have the opportunity to come to Once Upon a Prom and try on lots of different style dresses and find one that makes them excited to go to prom,” said Matlack.
The club established the prom dress event in 2014.
“The idea behind it is that once you’ve had your once-upon-a-time moment, you can give another hers,” said Matlack. “The dress is a huge part of going to prom and unfortunately for some young ladies it is an enormous financial burden so we decided as a club to provide dresses for those who might not otherwise have the means to purchase them.”
“Also, many girls are going to more than one event, so this gives them the opportunity to get a second dress and not incur the cost,” she added.

Last year, racks and racks of new and gently used dresses were set up and displayed with other items such as shoes and jewelry. Almost 60 young ladies browsed the collection of more than 1,000 dresses. Most of the girls attending left with multiple dresses and even a few accessories to complete the outfit at no charge.
“BJWC hopes that the financial pressure of prom is less because the cost of getting a dress is lifted. Every young lady deserves to find a dress that makes them feel beautiful!” said Matlack.
Open to girls in junior and senior high from all school districts, the 2023 event drew attendance from local girls from Boyertown, as well as those who traveled from surrounding school districts including Pottstown, Pottsgrove, Owen J. Roberts, Daniel Boone, Upper Perk, Perkiomen Valley, Norristown, as well as Northwestern and cyber schools.
For the 10th annual dress event, the club hopes to raise awareness of this event and reach more girls than in previous years.
“We have had nothing but positive feedback through the years,” said Matlack. “The best part of the event for club members is seeing the girls leave with a dress or two in hand and a smile.”
Girls in junior and senior high from all school districts are invited to attend the Once Upon a Prom dress event which will be held on March 2 and 3 and March 9 and 10 from 12 to 4 p.m. at the Boyertown YMCA, 301 W. Spring St. There is no charge for the dress or accessories. Monetary donations in any amount will be accepted and donated to Boyertown YMCA and other local charities.
