Brandywine Heights girls basketball hopes familiarity and athleticism will foster success during the 2021-22 season

About one month removed from winning Brandywine Heights’ first District 3 girls soccer title, a core group of players will try to bring the same success to the Bullets girls basketball team.

Multi-sport athletes Emily Savitz, Olivia Moyer, Dana Wartzenluft, Hannah Ray and Addison Benner have transitioned from the pitch to the hardwood and will try to lead Brandywine Heights on another postseason run. The Bullets began their 2021-22 season with a 44-27 win over Tri-Valley on Friday.

“We’re still really close from the soccer season, which I think is really beneficial,” said Savitz, a senior. “When everyone sees all of us together and how close we are, everyone feeds into it.”

The soccer season concluded for Brandywine with a loss in the state playoffs on Nov. 9, just 10 days before the first official basketball practice. Despite the quick turnaround, Bullets coach Don Vinciguerra said he “wouldn’t have it any other way,” and is happy to have multi-sport athletes on his squad.

“I think it makes them all-around better people,” he said. “We have a saying here: ‘Better athletes, better people.’ ”

Last season, Brandywine Heights won Berks IV for the first time since 2003 and finished 10-10. The season ended in the quarterfinals of the District 3 Class 3A playoffs.

“We want to win the division again,” Savitz said. “We want to get further into districts, and further into states.”

A young team, Brandywine Heights has just two seniors and one junior on the roster. The Bullets return everyone from last season except for all-division selection and leading-scorer Ashlyn Clark.

What they lack in experience, Vinciguerra said he believes they can make up for with athleticism.

“We’re athletic and we’re all over the place,” he said. “I think our defense is going to generate most of our offense.”

Savitz, an all-division selection last season, ranked second on the team in scoring with 8.6 points per game. Moyer, another all-division selection, averaged 6.8 points per game as a freshman.

In her final season of high school soccer, Savitz helped lead Brandywine Heights to the district title. Now, she hopes to do the same for the school’s girls basketball team.

“I’d like to finish it off (on) the same high as I did for soccer,” Savitz said. “Having it finish off on the ultimate-level high would mean the world.”
