When Ron Schaeffer Jr. resigned after three years as Penn State York baseball coach, he didn’t know if he’d be coaching this spring and he didn’t care.
He just knew he wanted to be at home more with his two young sons.
Now Schaeffer has the best of both worlds.
Brandywine Heights announced Friday it has hired the 36-year-old as its new baseball coach.
“It takes a lot of time to coach college baseball,” he said. “It’s like having a second full-time job. I didn’t want to risk my full-time employment to continue. I also have two little guys at home (under the age of 6). This will allow me to spend more time with them.”
Schaffer succeeds Chris Cole, who resigned in September as the most successful baseball coach in Brandywine history. Cole guided the Bullets to a 230-147 record in 18 seasons, the PIAA Class 2A title in 2009, three other PIAA semifinal appearances and two District 3 championships.
“It’s good to be back home coaching in the county,” Schaeffer said. “I know the history of the program. I played with some of the guys who played there in college and in leagues. I want to continue that tradition.”
He’s a 2003 graduate of Central Catholic who played at Penn State Berks and graduated from there. He has a long list of coaching stops, including PSU Berks and Ursinus as an assistant, Shillington Senior Legion, Conrad Weiser Junior Legion and Gov. Mifflin middle school teams.
He guided Penn State York to a 9-8 record in 2019 and a 7-14 record in 2021 before he resigned in December. The 2020 season was canceled because of the pandemic.
His father, Ron Schaeffer, is the baseball coach at Antietam, which plays in Berks IV with Brandywine Heights. The teams will meet twice this season.
“I think I’m able to relate to all different kinds of kids at different ages,” the younger Schaeffer said. “I want to be able to give back all the experiences I’ve had over the years.”
