From Reading Area Community College
The Broadbent Family Foundation has established the Broadbent Scholarship Program for Students Pursuing a Career in Essential Technology with a $250,000 commitment. The Broadbent Scholarship will enable talented students who might not be able to meet all the financial demands to enroll in and complete programs offered at the Schmidt Center for Training and Technology at Reading Area Community College (RACC). Students will be able to further their education through Technology-Based Workforce Degree or Certificate Programs. Preference will be given to graduates of Reading High School.
“There is a significant need for talented workers in electrical, mechanical, robotics, smart automation, cybersecurity, hydraulics, machining, PLC Networking, and all the other disciplines taught at the Schmidt Center for Training & Technology,” said Broadbent Family Foundation trustee, John Broadbent. “Our objective is to attract more students to these important fields of study, especially students from Reading High School.”
The Schmidt Center for Training and Technology is the award-winning teaching center driving workforce development in Berks County. The center employs a hands-on approach in its training, with a clear understanding of the technological challenges faced by the region’s employers.
“Finding employees with essential technical skills is a significant concern for local employers. The Broadbent Scholarship is John’s vision to address the need to help more students from urban schools to study the programs that fall within the spectrum of Essential Technology,” said Executive Director of the Foundation for RACC, Anthony DeMarco. “We encourage other community leaders to consider supporting this vital program.”
RACC’s admissions team will be contacting the guidance counselors at Reading High School and other Berks County schools to promote the Broadbent Scholarship and the possibilities that exist once a student completes his or her training.
“We are so grateful to John and the Broadbent family for this extraordinary gift to help students afford the programs at the Schmidt Center for Training and Technology that will lead to enriching and fulfilling careers,” said RACC President Dr. Susan Looney.
