Bryan Reinsel named 2022 Keystone Classic Tournament Champion

Bryan Reinsel rolled a spectacular series at the Keystone Social Club in Hamburg to be crowned this year’s tournament champion of the 14th Annual Keystone Classic bowling on the “B” squad.

Reinsel had games of 228, 231 and 269 for a 728 scratch series coupled with 41 pins of handicap for a 769 total to win first place.

Young Robby Henne, bowling on the “D” squad and final day of the tournament, made a valiant effort but fell short with a 706 total score to finish second place.

Placing third Blake Lucas posted an “A” squad score and early lead of 691.

The tournament was run over four days with each competitor choosing one day to bowl their three games. This handicap singles event was based on last year’s highest Keystone average of each bowler. Their three-game total plus handicap determined how they placed in the tournament standings. There were daily and tournament long prizes up for grabs.

The Keystone Social Club has a long history of bowling dating back to the 1920s. Andy Varipapa, bowling great and trick shot artist, appeared there in 1936 for an exhibition and challenge match against club members.

There are only two lanes and had used pin boys up until 1974 when automatic pinsetters were installed. Only the last six years did the Club start using a lane oiling machine to apply lane conditioner to the lane surface. Previously the lanes were oiled by hand using an insecticide sprayer.

The old-fashioned method has produced four perfect 300 games rolled by Harry Casper, Dwight Heckman, Scott Kreider and Brian Gerner. Bobby Heffner scored a 300 in January 2015 on the newer application method. Harry Casper’s 300 was bowled over 80 years ago in 1942.

The lanes have been resurfaced in April 2022 which is regular maintenance of wood lanes. This has improved scores tremendously.

Tournament Director Scott Kreider invites any member to sign up for next year’s installment of this event which is scheduled for Dec. 7 to 10, 2023.
