Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber power Phillies past reeling Yankees

NEW YORK — Bryce Harper homered deep into the right-field bleachers, and Kyle Schwarber hit a two-run double after New York’s 10th error in five games, sparking the Phillies to a 9-4 win Saturday as the reeling Yankees awaited test rests on the right elbow of captain Aaron Judge.

Trea Turner drove in two runs, and Edmundo Sosa homered for the Phillies, who opened a 9-1 lead. The Phillies started the day a half-game behind the NL East-leading New York Mets.

Schwarber has six RBIs and Turner is 6 for 11 as the Phillies have outscored New York 21-9 in the first two games of the three-game series. Schwarber homered twice in Friday night’s win, including the 1,000th base hit of his career.

Harper’s homer on Saturday was his 15th of the season and 351st of his career.

Ranger Suárez (8-4) allowed one run and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings with eight strikeouts and one walk, throwing a season-high 108 pitches.

Judge was out of the Yankees’ starting lineup for just the second time this season. His elbow has been bothering him since a throw Tuesday at Toronto, and manager Aaron Boone said the two-time AL MVP was sent for a scan Saturday morning.

New York began the day a season-high 5 1/2 games behind AL East-leading Toronto and dropped to 3-5 since the All-Star break.

Schwarber doubled after second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. bobbled Turner’s potential inning-ending, double-play grounder in the seventh, Chisholm’s 12th error this season.

Ryan McMahon went 1 for 3 with a walk in his Yankees debut, a day after the third baseman was acquired from Colorado for a pair of pitching prospects.

Marcus Stroman (2-2) allowed four runs, five hits and four walks in 3 2/3 innings.

Sosa hit a two-run homer in the seventh off Allan Winans. He left the game with a back contusion after he was elbowed in the back by left fielder Brandon Marsh in a collision while catching a Chisholm popup in the bottom of the seventh.

Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos didn’t play after he jammed his knee Friday night. It’s just the second time this season that Castellanos, who played all 162 games last year, hasn’t started.

Giancarlo Stanton hit a two-run drive against Daniel Robert in the bottom half of the seventh.

Phillies land Hicklen

Before the game, the Phillies acquired outfielder Brewer Hicklen in a trade from Detroit for cash considerations.

Hicklen was optioned to Triple A. To make room for him on the 40-man roster, pitcher Ryan Cusick was designated for assignment.

Hicklen, 29, is a right-handed outfielder. He hit .227 with eight homers and 31 RBIs in 61 games for Toledo this season. He’s played 10 games in three big-league stints with Kansas City in 2022, aptly the Brewers in 2024 and the Tigers this year, where he went 2-for-3 in his lone game on May 8.

The Phillies first acquired Hicklen in August 2023 from Kansas City, which drafted him in the seventh round in 2017, for cash. He played 11 games at Lehigh Valley with nine hits and two homers before being granted free agency.

Cusick, a first round pick of Atlanta in 2021, was claimed off waivers from the Chicago White Sox on June 8. The righty made six relief appearances for Lehigh Valley with a 12.86 ERA.
