Bulletin board: 5K run/walk to support Berks mental health

NAMI Berks County PA, the local affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Health, will be bringing awareness to September’s Suicide Awareness Month with their Second Annual “It’s Okay to Not Be Okay” 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, Sept. 14. This event will be held at Grings Mill Recreation Area in Spring Township.

To help bring awareness to the high incidence of suicide in Berks County and to memorialize those who died, the course will be lined with flags. Participants will be encouraged to stop by the registration table to pick up a free flag for a loved one who died by suicide.

The race starts at 9:30 a.m. Top male and female finishers will receive a cash award and medals. The top 3 finishers in each age group will receive awards. Registration is open, and more information is available at www.namiberkspa.org, and in-person the day of the race.

Proceeds will help NAMI Berks County continue to provide free support groups, educational classes and advocacy for all those in Berks County who suffer from a mental health issue, and their families.

Hangar dance

The Mid-Atlantic Air Museum will present a 1940s Hangar Dance on Saturday. The event will feature a performance by the Generation Band from 7 to 10 p.m. Doors open at 6.  Advance tickets can be purchased at the museum at 11 Museum Drive or at maam.org: $25 for adults, $10 for children ages 6-17 and children under 6 enter for free. Tickets at the door are $30 for adults, $10 for children ages 6-17 and children under 6 enter for free.

Berks park programs

The Berks County Parks & Recreation Department has the following programs scheduled for September:

Monday: Ringgold Band concert, 10 a.m.-noon, Berks County Heritage Center, Bern Township. Bring your own chairs and blanket. Free.

Saturday: Fall Frolic Wellness Walk, 9 a.m., Angora Fruit Farm, Lower Alsace Township. An hourlong brisk walk with like-minded friends. Free but registration recommended.

Sunday: Charcoal, Tree Planting and Pantyhose: The History of Nolde Forest, 2 p.m. at the Heritage Center. Learn about the social and environmental factors that made Nolde Forest Environmental Education Center the gem that it is today. Free.

Sept. 12: Trail Tales, 10 a.m. at Bingaman House, Lower Alsace Township. Toddlers can discover plants and animal friends in the parks. This program for ages 3 to 5 focuses on a nature topic each month with a story and a craft. Free but registration required.

Sept. 12: The Return of the Bats, 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Heritage Center. Dr. Karen Campbell of Albright College will discuss the lives of bats from around the world to Berks’ own Wertz’s Covered Red Bridge. Free.

Sept. 14: Family Fishing Day, 9 a.m., Antietam Lake Park, Lower Alsace Township.  No experience or tackle necessary and no fishing license required. Rods, bait and tackle will be provided. Free but registration required.

Sept. 14: Nature Journaling with Berks Nature, 10 a.m., Heritage Center. Build your own nature journal and head out into the park for inspiration. Free but registration required.

Sept. 15: Farm Fest, noon to 4 p.m., Heritage Center. Celebrate farm life and culture. Look behind the scenes and visit rarely opened parts of the park that tell that story of life on a local farm. Wagon rides, animals, food and more. Free

Sept. 17: Hike & Yoga, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Berks Leisure Area, Spring Township.  Walk along the beautiful Union Canal trail followed by a yoga class and peaceful meditation. Free but registration required  at aopaddle.simplybook.me/v2/#book-class/service/65

Sept. 27: Fall Glow Hike, 7 p.m. at Angora Fruit Farm. A twilight hike on Antietam Lake Park’s forested trails by the light of glowsticks. Appropriate for children ages 7 and older due to uneven terrain. Free but registration required.

Sept. 28: Gruber Wagon Works Belt Running Day, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Heritage Center. The Wagon Works will be open to the public throughout the day with stationed guides throughout the museum. Demonstrations of the Otto “Hit and Miss” Engine will take place at 12:30 and 3 p.m. Free.

Baseball fundraiser

The annual Field of Dreams baseball game is scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Robesonia baseball field, 102 W. Ruth Ave.  Hot dogs will be for sale, and baked goods are available for a monetary donation.  There will be drawings for raffle baskets and gift cards. Raffle tickets are pulled at noon.

Nature walk

The Wyomissing Public Library will host a nature walk along the Wyomissing Creek on Saturday starting at 10 a.m.. Limited to 15 participants, the walk will be led by Dr. Susan Munch, retired biology professor at Albright College, and Sue Moyer, community volunteer. The walk, which will last about an hour, will focus on trees and plants that grow in the area.

Collecting purses

Reading Roller Derby is teaming with the Bridge of Hope Church in Womelsdorf to collect gently used purses.

The church will fill the bags with feminine products and distribute them to local women through a monthly community outreach program.

Pads, tampons, and other feminine hygiene products are the most in-demand items at shelters with female residents. For any woman who gets a period, these products are a basic necessity like food, water, and shelter.

Contact one of the Reading Roller Derby skaters or bring a bag to the team’s game Sunday. Each person who donates a bag at the game will get a $3 team merchandise voucher.

Line dancing

Adult Line Dancing with Big Dave as DJ will be held on the first and third Wednesdays of each month from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. starting Sept. 4 at the Fleetwood Grange, 2864 Moselem Spring Road. All ages are welcome. Lessons for beginners are available.

Admission is $8. No cleats on boots. Proceeds benefit the Fleetwood Grange and Fleetwood Area Public Library.  Call 484-388-3419 with questions.
