Bulletin board: Hay Creek Festival brings history to life

The 48th annual Hay Creek Festival is set for Sept. 6-8 at Joanna Furnace in Robeson Township, put on by hundreds of interpreters, craftsmen and volunteers showing what a day in the 19th century Joanna Furnace community would have looked like.

The Festival runs each day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Parking is free on the festival grounds on Friday.  Free, continuously running shuttle buses will be provided from an offsite parking area from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $10 for adults, $2 for children ages 6 to 12, and free for children 5 and younger. Joanna Furnace is located 3 miles north of Morgantown on Route 10.

The exhibits and demonstrations include traditional early American crafts, a contemporary craft market, living history presentations and interpretations, vintage industrial revolution era working equipment, threshing demonstrations, a working sawmill, children’s hands-on activities, a traditional four-square kitchen herb garden, Civil War and World War II encampments, antique vehicles, steam engines and tractors, folk music presentations, homemade festive foods and more.

Steering wheel locks

State police will be conducting a steering wheel lock handout event for Kia and Hyundai owners on Aug. 31 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Classic Harley Davidson, 983 James Drive, Bern Township.

The handout is for owners of Hyundai and Kia vehicles from model years 2010 and later with manual key ignitions. It will be first come, first served.

Farmers market

The Antietam Valley Farmers Market is holding its Monday Market Mingle Aug. 19 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Carsonia Park, 905 Byram St., Pennside, for an evening of shopping, sampling, dinner and dessert, mingling with fellow members of the community and listening to  local musician Dan Hauk. The event is rain or shine.

History program

The Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley’s next educational program, “Granny’s Panties,” will be held Wednesday, Aug. 28, at 7 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 167 E Main St., Ephrata.

Speaker Heather Gibbs of Treadle Treasures will discuss all the layers of clothing people wore to conform to the dictates of society in years past.  She will provide a display of authentic apparel.

Legacy learning

The Hamburg Area Historical Society is presenting a program on Thursday, Sept. 5, at 7 p.m. in the Hamburg High School LGI room. Dwayne Henne will offer a talk on his book “Henne Legacy.” Dressed in period costume and using his own extensive research, he will tell the story of what his ancestors may have experienced when immigrating from Palatinate Germany to America in the 1750s.

On Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. Berks Photographic Society member Ginnie Lodge will share Photoshop tips and tricks. Learn how to go from Lightroom to Photoshop and back again. Find out about the power of layers and masks. Learn how and when to use the new generative AI features to remove objects or expand your photos, and more.
