Bulletin board: Orchestra to perform at Brandywine Heights

The Reading Philharmonic Orchestra is performing a concert on Sunday, Oct. 20, at 3 p.m. at Brandywine Heights High School. High school students will be playing next to Philharmonic members. The Brandywine Community Library will have Gertrude Hawk candy bars for sale.

Admission is free. Donations will be split between the Reading Philharmonic Orchestra and the library.

Book and bake sale

A fall book and bake sale will be held Saturday, Oct. 19, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Exeter Community Library, 4569 Prestwick Drive, Exeter Township. A bag of books costs $5 starting at 1 p.m.. The event is a fundraiser for Friends of the Exeter Community Library.

Scouting fundraiser

Blandon Boy Scout Troop 183 has scheduled a “burger burn” for Saturday, Oct. 19, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Weaver’s Ace Hardware, 732 Fleetwood Lyons Road, Richmond Township.

Breakfast sandwiches, baked goods, coffee and water will be served in the morning, and hamburgers, hot dogs, baked goods and water will be served in the afternoon. Donate what you feel is appropriate for your meal to support the troop and its work in the community.

Train station open house

The final Wernersville train station open house of the season is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 20,  from 1 to 4 p.m. The fully restored 1926 station displays artifacts from the Reading Railroad and surrounding community. This free event is open to the public and is hosted by the Heidelberg Heritage Society with docents available to answer questions.

History program

The Fleetwood Area Historical Society will meet Wednesday Oct. 16, at 7 p.m. in the Fleetwood Community Center.  Member Dale Adams will show highlights of his postcard collection including images of old Atlantic City. Visitors are welcome to bring and show their favorite postcards. Admission is free, and all are welcome.

Halloween parade

The Daniel Boone Optimist Club Halloween Parade is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 22, at 6:30 p.m. at the Lake Drive Park and Recreation Area, Douglassville. Rain date is Oct. 29.

Registration for the costume contest for individuals, groups and floats is from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. The club will award cash prizes to the most creative entries in multiple categories, including a pet category. Free refreshments will be given to registered participants.

Food vendors will be on hand, and One to One Productions will provide musical entertainment.

Book sale

A book sale will be held at the Wernersville Library, 100 N. Reber St. The pre-sale is set for Tuesday, Oct. 22, from 3 to 6 p.m. Admission fee is $5 for the pre-sale. The sale continues Oct. 23 and 24 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Oct. 25 from noon to 6 p.m. and Oct. 26 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Geology talk

Geologist Ronald A. Sloto will present a program on the geology of the Hopewell Big Woods on Sunday, Oct. 20, at 2 p.m. in the visitor center at Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site, Union Township.

The Big Woods is a 73,000-acre landscape in Berks and Chester counties. Those attending are encouraged to arrive as early as possible to ensure a seat.

Trunk or treat

A trunk or treat program take place Sunday, Oct. 20, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Calvary United Church of Christ, 1231 Route 100, Barto. All are welcome.

Photo shoot

The Berks Photographic Society annual Halloween Photo Shoot has been scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 26, from noon to 4 p.m. at the GoggleWorks Center for the Arts, 200 Washington St., Suite 326, Reading

This is free for society members. Nonmembers can get in with a $10 donation.

This “Beetlejuice”-themed Halloween photoshoot is hosted by Richard Shay and Kim Sweimler. Models playing Beeteljuice and Lydia will be on hand. Photograph “dry ice in the glass” and a carved pumpkin of Beetlejuice created by professional pumpkin carver James Eggito. There will also be plenty of Halloween props set up in the hallway.

Participants should bring a camera, tripod and pocket wizard if they have one.

Talk on tea

The Pennsylvania Heartland Herb Society will host Karen Greenhalgh, a certified tea sommelier professional, Thursday, Oct. 17, at 9:30 a.m. at West Lawn United Methodist Church, 15 Woodside Ave.

Quilting auction

The Historic Preservation Trust of Berks County has scheduled a quilting auction presentation on Saturday, Oct. 19, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the White Horse Inn on Old Philadelphia Pike in Douglassville. It is the final program in this year’s Third Saturday series of programs.

The event begins at 9 with a silent auction preview of quilting fabric, books, magazines and accessories. At 10, Becky Hughes will discuss the importance of quilts, how fabric and designs have changed over time and some little-known facts about quilting. Visitors will have a chance to try their hand at quilting.

People are encourage to bring along any quilt they wish to share or ask questions about.
Following the presentation, there will be a silent auction until 1 p.m. Proceeds will be
applied to restoration of the Mouns Jones/Kirlin House.

Kempton pavilion

The Kempton Lions Club is dedicating a new pavilion at Leaser Lake on Sunday, Oct. 20, at 2 p.m. The program will be held rain or shine. Seating is limited, so those attending are encouraged to bring chairs. Light refreshments will be served. The dedication program will be followed by a demonstration of the accessible kayak launch at the site.

The Kempton Lions spearheaded the effort to create a pavilion on this site with support from other Lions organizations and community donors.

The pavilion is located on the Leaser Lake West Shore access area near the dam. The GPS address is 8500 Follweiler Court.
