Berks Community Health Center will celebrate National Health Center Week with two Community Day events this week in Reading.
BCHC’s celebration begins Tuesday with Community Day at Oakbrook (1040 Liggett Ave.) from 4 to 6 p.m. A Community Day also is planned for Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 838 Penn St.
Both events are free and open to all members of the community. They will include bounce houses, a dunk tank and other activities for children. There will be music, refreshments, health screenings, raffle prizes and information tables presented by local organizations and representatives.
A fundraiser is being held Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza in Spring Township. Say that you are eating to support BCHC and 20% of your order will be donated.

Smokey celebration
The Berks County Parks & Recreation Department is celebrating Smokey the Bear’s 80th birthday Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the county Heritage Center in Bern Township. The event is rain or shine.
Activities include a chance to grab a birthday treat, meet Smokey and hear the character’s story. There will be a coloring station and contest and an opportunity to construct a Smokey craft. Paint your face like Smokey. Those who complete their Smokey passport win a prize.
Check out firetrucks up close and see a drone demonstration and learn how they help fight forest fires. Smokey memorabilia will be on display in the barn Conservation-oriented organizations will be on hand.
Lunch is available from the Lio Colon Food Bus along with treats from Greco’s Italian Ices & Homemade Ice Cream.
Basketball event
Royalty Society Inc. presents a back-to-school basketball tournament Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at 11th and Washington streets in Reading’s City Park.

Golden retrievers
Delaware Valley Golden Retriever Rescue will hold its monthly open house Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon at its Golden Gateway facility at 60 Vera Cruz Road, Reinholds. Meet and greet golden retrievers and dogs available for adoption. Staff is on hand to answer all questions, and food is also available for purchase. No admission charge. Hawk migration
Hawk Mountain’s annual Autumn Migration Hawkwatch takes place daily from Aug. 15 through Dec. 15. Visitors can join the sanctuary counters as they monitor the southbound raptor migration from the famous North Lookout.
Trail fees apply for non-members: $10 for adults, $7 for seniors, and $5 for children ages 6-12; ages 5 and younger are free. Members are admitted free. The sanctuary is located in Albany Township.
Visitors are welcome to spend the day at the North Lookout. Visitors with small children or limited mobility may prefer the South Lookout, which can be accessed via the ADA accessible Silhouette Trail.

Mascot celebration
Brandywine Community Library is celebrating its mascot’s 37th birthday with a party and a creek race Saturday, Aug. 10, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Topton Community Park.
The library’s mascot, Sheldon, is a Greek tortoise that lives in the library. The birthday celebration features free family activities such as face painting, sand art, Plinko and lawn games.
The event includes a Tortoise Trek Creek Race in which plastic numbered tortoises will race in the Toad Creek to see which will cross the finish line first. Deer hunt
Applications for the annual Nolde Forest Permit-Only Archery Deer Hunt are available at the Center Office through Friday, Aug. 9. The office is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Calling ahead is advisable due to limited staff.
The hunt takes place Sept. 23 through Nov. 27 and Dec. 26 to Jan. 24 at the Nolde Forest Environmental Education Center, 3025 New Holland Road, Cumru Township.
To apply, hunters must have a current Pennsylvania hunting license, Pennsylvania Archery stamp and Wildlife Management Unit 5C antlerless deer license.
Prospective hunters have until 4 p.m. Friday to return their applications and signed/dated hunter agreement with a self-addressed stamped envelope to be considered for the hunt. Hunters will be selected by lottery on Aug. 12. Successful applicants will be notified by mail.
Hunters selected through the drawing must attend an orientation program on Sept. 16. Those who do not attend will be replaced by individuals on the waiting list. Selected hunters will be assigned one of four hunt periods:

Medicine history
A program on the practice of medicine is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 12, at 7:30 p.m. at the Tulpehocken Settlement Historical Society, 116 N. Front St., Womelsdorf.
The program will be presented by Dave Snook, a Civil War reenactor who will portray a Union medical officer. He will describe Civil War medical treatment using medical items and period sources. He will use actual named troops from the Tulpehocken area as examples.

Food trucks
Olive Leaf Chapel, 846 Fritztown Road, Spring Township, will feature food trucks in the grove on Aug. 15 from 4 to 7 p.m. Participants are The Messy Pig, Havin’ a Meltdown, Castaneda and R.J. Sweetzee’s.
Daniel Boone run
The Daniel Boone Dash 5k/10k will be held Sept. 29 at 9 a.m. at the Daniel Boone Homestead in Exeter Township. It features a new course that includes gravel and paved surfaces but is primarily run on pavement. Those who register early get a discounted rate, a T-shirt and a pass for a guided Boone House tour.
Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. at the Visitor Center. Snacks are available following the race. There will be a water stop on the route.

Friends of Mifflin Community Library is holding a bus trip to Philadelphia on Oct. 5. Tickets are $60 and cover the cost of transportation only. The bus leaves at 8:30 a.m. from Rite Aid, 500 E. Lancaster Ave., Shillington. It is scheduled to arrive at the Independence Hall visitor center at about 10 a.m. Return trip begins at 5 p.m. Register at the library, 6 Philadelphia Ave., Shillington, by Sept. 4 or until the bus is filled. Road ramble
The Berks History Center Road Ramble is set for Oct. 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The self-guided driving tour shares little-known facts about historical sites throughout Berks County.
This year’s tour focuses on southern Berks County sites such as the Beidler House, Nolde Forest Environmental Center, Berks Military History Museum, Mount Frisby AME Church and the Brooke Mansion.
The tour begins at Ridgewood Winery in Cumru Township and concludes at Hay Creek Valley Historical Association in Geigertown.
Tickets are $35 per car for center members and $45 for nonmembers and can be purchased at berkshistory.org.

Civil War program
A free program on “Real Boys of the Civil War” will be presented Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Visitor Center Theatre at Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site, Union Township.
Author and retired teacher J. Arthur Moore will discuss the more than 200,000 underage children who participated in the Civil War, who they were and what happened to them.
The Antietam Valley Farmers Market is holding its Monday Market Mingle on Aug. 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Carsonia Park, 905 Byram St., Pennside, for an evening of shopping, sampling, dinner and dessert, mingling with fellow members of the community and listening to reggae music by Dan Poruban. The event is rain or shine.
