Bulletin board: Reading Hospital to hold trail challenge

Reading Hospital and its Community Wellness Department are sponsoring the sixth annual Berks Trail Challenge. It started May 1 and runs through Oct. 31.

Visit BeWellBerks.org/berks-trail-challenge to register and print out a challenge card to record trail visits as well as a schedule of guided hikes. The challenge card highlights eight local trails and includes the difficulty level and terrain of each. The trails range in length from 1 to 9.5 miles. Trail challenge cards must be submitted by Friday, Nov. 10, to be entered to win a prize. Forty winners will be selected at random.

Guided hikes will be offered throughout the challenge. New this year are a series of bilingual hikes.

Garden talk

The Pennsylvania German Four Square Garden will be presented by Linda Manwiller at the Tulpehocken Settlement Historical Society’s membership meeting tonight at 7:30 in the society’s headquarters, 116 N. Ballet performance

Berks Ballet Theatre will mount “The Sleeping Beauty Suite” Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Miller Center for the Arts, 4 N. Second St., Reading. It is a condensed rendition of a classic ballet.

Food truck event

The Berks County Intermediate Unit is hosting a Food Truck & Vendor Event on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m at 1111 Commons Blvd., Muhlenberg Township. The event is open to the public, and entry is free. Proceeds benefit the United Way of Berks County.

Attendees can enjoy local traveling restaurants and other businesses, children’s activities, a chance to learn about community services and more.

Video contest

Berks Career and Technology Center won third place among Pennsylvania schools in the “Just Drive” public service announcement video contest sponsored by NJM Insurance Group in partnership with the Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey and Impact Teen Driver. The contest was intended to highlight the dangers of distracted driving.

BCTC won $5,000 for “Game Begin,” which highlighted important safety steps to take before driving including adjusting car mirrors, fastening seat belts, and storing cellphones.

Voting discussion

The League of Women Voters of Berks County will present “After the Vote,” a program on the May 16 municipal primary. The program will air live on Tuesday at 8 p.m. on Berks Community Television and will be available for streaming on bctv.org.

Learn what Berks does to ensure local elections are safe, secure and accurate. Guests will be Anne Norton, director of Berks County elections; Stephanie Weaver, assistant director; and Karen Parish, judge of elections.

Flea market

The Muhlenberg Township Parks Department will hold its Spring Flea Market Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Jim Dietrich Park’s grassy parking lot. Rain date is Sunday.

This is a new location for this event so please note the changes in reservation procedures. Space sizes are 20 feet by 20 feet and are located in the grassy field area next to the farmhouse.   Specific spot numbers are not reserved but will be assigned as vendors enter the event.  If you want to be next to someone, please arrive together. Rental fee is $15 per space. Tables are not provided. Set up starts at 6 a.m. Do not arrive earlier.

Refreshments will be sold by the Muhlenberg Community Library fundraising group, so vendors may not sell food or drinks of any kind. The sale of weapons, counterfeit merchandise, illegal fireworks and alcoholic is not allowed.

Pre-registration is required for vendors at www.muhlenbergtwp.com. The next flea market is scheduled for Sept. 9.

Hopewell program

Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site in Union Township is holding its annual sheep shearing and spring charcoal burn on Saturday.  Visitors will have the opportunity to observe past and present techniques for shearing sheep from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., rain or shine.

At 11 a.m. volunteer colliers will light and begin the spring charcoal burn, demonstrating the process for converting wood to charcoal in the 19th century. The charcoal burn will last seven days.

Park staff and volunteers will discuss and demonstrate fiber arts, blacksmithing, and gardening techniques from the time period.  All programs are open to the public and free of charge.

NAACP program

The Reading Branch NAACP is holding community conversations with the theme, “A Journey of Co-Creating A Community of Healing Through Trauma Informed Conversations.” The next conversation is scheduled for Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the Penn State Berks Beaver Community Center, room 103. Further conversations will be held each Tuesday through May 30 at the same location.

Organizers said the idea behind the program is to gather people with a range of experiences, perspectives and histories and to explore intergenerational healing conversations that allow us to create holistic and supportive spaces that are responsive to the impact of stress, racism, marginalization and trauma.

Book sale

A book sale is scheduled for Tuesday through Saturday in the Wernersville Public Library, 100 N. Reber St.. Pre Sale is Tuesday from 3 to 6 p.m, with an admission fee of $5. Free admission other days. Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, noon to 6 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Wheels for Victory

The Wheels for Victory Charity Car/Truck/Motorcycle/Tractor Show will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Kempton Community Center. The event includes food, entertainment, silent auction and 50-50 drawing. Cost to register a vehicle is $10 until May 9, $15 thereafter. Free admission for guests. Tractor show

Just Farm Kids has scheduled a tractor show on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 425 Chestnut St. in Bally. Rain date is Sunday. Car show

The third annual Jim Keppley Memorial Car Show will be held Saturday, May 20, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Main Street in Stouchsburg. It is sponsored by the Marion Township Community Association. Preregistration $10; day of show registration, $15. Proceeds benefit the playground upgrade project. The first 150 registrants receive a thank you gift.

Dog rescue events

Delaware Valley Golden Retriever Rescue will hold an open house Saturday from 10 a.m. until noon at its Golden Gateway facility at 60 Vera Cruz Road, Reinholds. Meet and greet dogs available for adoption. Staff is on hand to answer questions, and food is available for purchase. No admission charge. The organization will hold an outdoor classic rock concert on Saturday, May 20 (rain date May 21) from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Golden Gateway. Proceeds will benefit dogs in its care.

This is an outdoor event, and dogs are welcome. Only one dog per handler, and dogs must remain on a leash (6 feet maximum and no flexis). Bring yard chairs or blankets. Attendees may register for the concert only or a ticket plus a sub sandwich meal. Ice cream and soft drinks will be available for purchase.

Dog adopters Dan and Sandy Clouser and their golden retriever Youkilis will be on hand. The Clousers wrote a children’s book about their dog, which was adopted from DVGRR and travels across the country.

Spirit on Tap

The following Spirit on Tap programs are scheduled for May:

Book discussion of “The Brothers Karamazov,” Thursday at 9:30 a.m., St. John’s United Church of Christ, 257 W. Walnut St., Kutztown. The discussion will be led by Craig Bennett, a retired professor. It will be followed by a program on “Practicing the Joy of Being” at 10:30 a.m., led by psychologist Jim Skelton.

The group’s Soul Cafe program, “The Nature of Consciousness,” will be held May 16 at 9:30 a.m. at West Lawn United Methodist Church, 15 Woodside Ave. Michelle Koch will speak about the principle of the interconnectedness of all living beings.

On May 23 at 7 p.m. the group will host “What Makes Church Life Beautiful?” at the DoubleTree by Hilton hotel at 701 Penn St., Reading. The Rev. Bill Worley will discuss how congregations must not lose focus on their connection to God as they work to attract resources and members.
