Bulletin board: Street art festival coming to Muhlenberg Township

The Berks Street Art Festival: Kindness & Creativity is scheduled for Saturday, May 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Reading-Muhlenberg Career and Technology Center, 2615 Warren Road, Muhlenberg Township. Rain date is May 13.

The event is an experiential, hands-on, outdoor family fun day in a safe environment promoting kindness and creativity. Admission is free and food available for purchase.

Musician Dave Kline will perform at noon.

Organizers said they are increasing the number of interactive play stations and community resources along with experiential activities around art, street performers, dance and music.

Basket making

Join the Daniel Boone Homestead Associates for a spring basket making workshop led by Vicky Heffner. The workshop will take place Sunday, April 28, from noon to 4 p.m. in the Wayside Lodge at the Daniel Boone Homestead in Exeter Township.

Participants will make a Krista’s Oval Basket. Participants are asked to bring a bucket, 10-spring clothespins (not plastic), towel, flathead screwdriver, ruler or tape measure and an old pair of scissors. If you do not have some of the items, extra supplies and tools will be provided.

Registration is required for the workshop. A form can be obtained by emailing thedanielboonehomestead@gmail.com. Cost is $40 for members and $45 for nomembers. Proceeds support the homestead. Make out checks to the Daniel Boone Homestead Associates and mailed to Daniel Boone Homestead Associates, 400 Daniel Boone Road, Birdsboro, PA 19508. Space is limited to 15 participants. Please register by April 21.

Suicide prevention

A Soul Shop faith-based suicide prevention program is scheduled for Saturday, May 4, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Reformation Lutheran Church, 3670 Perkiomen Ave., Reiffton.

Co-sponsored by the Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and NEPA Synod of the ELCA, Soul Shop equips participants with the resources and guidance they need to foster hope and healing in their community.

This one-day workshop is designed to equip faith community leaders to minister to those impacted by suicide. This includes the creation of worship resource, training congregation members in suicide awareness and basic conversation skills and extending the invitation to those who have been suicidal in the past to share their stories.

A $20 registration fee is required to secure your place in this training (valued at $250) and is subsidized by the NEPA Synod of the ECLA and the Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Lunchtime jazz

The Muhlenberg Arts Board is hosting a Jazz at Lunchtime Concert in Jim Dietrich Park on Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Rain date is Friday. Muhlenberg middle and high school students will be performing.

Spectators should bring lawn chairs or blankets. The concert is free of charge. There will be food for sale under the pavilion.

The concert will be performed on the basketball court just off the parking lot near pavilion #2.  All are welcome to attend. Call 610-929-4727 for more details.

Indigenous peoples

The Heidelberg Heritage Society will meet Thursday at 7 p.m. Amanda Funk will speak on “Indigenous Peoples of Berks County.” The meeting takes place at the Historic Lerch Tavern, 182 Penn Ave., Wernersville. The public is welcome.

Funk is executive director of Widoktadwen, Center for Native Knowledge. Though enrolled in the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, a group whose lands were south and west of Lake Michigan, she is from Reading. She will explain how her famil, and hundreds of families from other indigenous groups got to Berks County.

The Heidelberg Heritage Society focuses on the history of Wernersville and the surrounding townships commonly called the Heidelbergs. It maintains museums at the Lerch Tavern and Wernersville Train Station.

Grief support

The sudSSpirit grief support group for those who have experienced the sudden unexpected death of a spouse or significant other will meet Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the Exeter Community Library, 4569 Prestwick Drive, Exeter Township. Vendor show, raffle

A fundraising spring vendor show and raffle is scheduled for Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the garage at 228 E. Main St., Fleetwood. The event benefits Berks County Veterans Temporary Assistance Program and Veterans Making A Difference.

Bring an item such as kitchen size trash bags, dish soap, paper towels or gift cards to Walmart or a grocery store and receive a free raffle ticket.  Many vendors will be on site.

History program

The Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley is hosting an educational program, “Before He Was a Catcher or a Spy: Moe Berg’s Year with the 1925 Reading Keys,” Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 167 E Main St., Ephrata.

Speaker Brian Engelhart will share the story of a major league catcher who played with five different teams, graduated cum laude from Princeton with a degree in languages, and spied for the CIA during World War II.

Chicken sale

Friends of Mifflin Community Library is holding a Kauffman’s Chicken BBQ Sale on Sunday, May 5, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. or until sold out. Event is in the Walgreens parking lot at the corner of Lancaster Avenue and Museum Road in Cumru Township.  Cost is $12 for half-chicken, baked potato and applesauce. The Oley Valley Community Library is holding a book sale Thursday through Saturday in conjunction with the Antique Motorcycle Club of America Perkiomen Chapter Motorcycle Meet at the Oley Fairgrounds.
