Busy April for Schuylkill Haven recreation department

Schuylkill Haven’s recreation department is very busy facilitating programs this spring.

Borough Councilman John Williams, who is recreation department representative, reported at the April 17 council meeting that the T-ball program is up and running with four teams of seven players. Practices started in mid-April, with the first game scheduled for May 11.

As of April 17, the flag football program had 150 kids signed up. Practices and games will be scheduled once teams and coaches are assigned.

There are two organizations using the soccer fields at Island Park. WSFC is using fields for spring practices and Schuylkill United soccer is using them for games. Schuylkill United is a borough-based program.

Three trout stockings have occurred in April. At least 200 trout have been stocked from the first two stockings alone between Island Park and Bubeck Park.

Due to copious rain and the high river, fish have been divided in a 60/40 split, with most going to Bubeck Park. Both parks have had large tagged fish recently added. Average community turnout to help with the event has been between 35 to 40 adults and children.

An Earth Day river cleanup occurred on Saturday, April 20 with a cleanup at Island Park.

A Haven in Bloom program will occur at Bubeck Park on May 11.

The brief meeting wrapped up with council approving an upcoming Rainbow Hose block party.
