The Schuylkill County Historical Society is presenting a series of programs to celebrate Christmas starting in mid-November.
The society will present a program on Ukrainian Christmas traditions at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 17, at its headquarters, 305 N. Centre St., Pottsville. Folk artist Georgine Postupak-Borchick and Kim Fritzges, an expert on Ukrainian and Russian culture, will discuss the country’s holiday food, decorations and icons. The society is holding its annual tree-decorating contest from Nov. 17 through Jan. 8. Local historical societies and other organizations are entering their trees, which will be on display at the society. Members of the public can vote as many times as they want for their favorite tree. Each vote will cost $1, and each group will receive all proceeds from the votes for its tree. Amy Dougherty, who operates a boilo business, will lead a class on how to make this popular regional beverage from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 1, at the society. Participants must bring a 1-pint mason jar and a half-cup to one cup of their preferred alcoholic beverage. The evening will end with boilo sampling. The society will present “A Colonial Christmas – A Winter with Washington’s Army” at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 8. Historian Mike Jesberger of Lansdale will detail the movements of the Continental Army in Pennsylvania during the winter of 1776 and describe Colonial Christmas customs.
