Cleveland Harding sparks Wilson’s win over Gov. Mifflin in boys basketball

Cleveland Harding scored six of his 12 points in the fourth quarter and played superb defense as Wilson turned back Gov. Mifflin 54-43 in a Berks Conference Division I game Tuesday night at West Lawn.

The Bulldogs (5-3, 10-5) strengthened their chances of making the Berks and District 3 Class 6A playoffs and damaged the hopes of the Mustangs (3-5, 7-9).

Going into the night, Wilson was 10th in the Class 6A power ratings and Mifflin was 13th. The top 12 teams qualify for the district playoffs.

Wilson leading scorer Cam Jones returned to the lineup after missing two weeks with a concussion and scored six points. But Jones began to feel ill as the game went on and saw limited action in the fourth quarter.

Harding made up for Jones’ absence, draining a pull-up jumper and driving for a layup. Keegan Coldren buried a 3-pointer that snapped a 41-41 tie with 5:10 left and sparked a 7-0 spurt that led to Wilson’s win.

Foday Sillah had 10 points and Ofure Odiale had nine for the Bulldogs, who held Gov. Mifflin to two points in the final 5:25.

Delsin McNeil scored 16 points for the Mustangs. Gerrell McNeil had 12 and Matt Harley 10.

Mifflin trailed by as many as eight points in the first quarter and by seven in the third. The Mustangs increased the pace and climbed back into it with several transition baskets.

Delsin McNeil scored on the break to give Mifflin a 33-32 lead late in the third, but Aidan Melograna quickly answered with a 3 and Sillah with a putback. The Mustangs tied it twice in the fourth, but they never regained the lead.
