College Basketball: Mennenga’s dunk lights a spark for Davidson

Sam Mennenga’s dunk with 13:19 left triggered a run that propelled Davidson to a 64-57 victory over La Salle at Gola Arena Tuesday night.

Mennenga’s slam gave the Wildcats a 44-43 lead and ignited a 12-5 burst that enabled the visitors to open up a 54-48 lead. The Explorers never got closer than three points and the Wildcats shot 5-for-6 from the free throw line in the final 33 seconds to ice the victory.

Mennenga led all scorers with 27 points. He also pulled down 11 rebounds. Foster Loyer pitched in with 12 points and six assists.

Daeshon Shepherd paced four La Salle players in double figures with 14 points and five rebounds. Hassan Drame pitched in with 11 points. Andres Marrero added 10 points, six rebounds and three assists, while Khalil Brantley also scored 10 points for La Salle.

Stevens Tech 82, DCCC 70 >> Namir Simmons posted a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds, and also handed out four assists to lift the Bulldogs over the Phantoms. Marcus Benning added 18 points and seven boards.

Neville Wilkinson led DCCC with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Jacob Bradshaw (13) and Vince Boykin (10) also reached double figures for the Phantoms (2-12, 2-6).

PSU-Wilkes-Barre 63, Williamson 59 >> Robert Whiley tallied 19 points but it wasn’t enough as the Mechanics fell to the second-ranked team in the USCAA Division II poll. Joe Grace added 17 points and Garrett Watkins chipped in with nine points and six assists.

Women’s Basketball

Swarthmore’s defense was too much for Bryn Mawr in a 62-18 romp over the Owls.

The Garnet limited Bryn Mawr to single digits in each quarter, forced 31 points and held the Owls to 19 percent shooting overall and eight percent from 3-point range.

Alyssa Hayashi led Swarthmore with 11 points, seven steals and four rebounds. Dana Bandurick and Harrison Anderson pitched in with eight points each.
