College Football: Villanova’s McQuaide throws for 4 TDs, including OT winner

Pat McQuaide hit Antonio Johnson with a 17-yard touchdown in overtime as Villanova walked off with a 30-27 win over Stony Brook on Saturday.

The win improves Villanova to 8-1 on the season and 7-1 in the CAA. They keep the pressure on Rhode Island, who leads the league at 7-0 with one game left, while Villanova ends the regular season with a nonleague clash against Sacred Heart.

The decision extends the Wildcats’ winning streak at Villanova Stadium to 21 games, the longest active streak in FCS. It’s the first overtime win for Villanova since 2019.

Stony Brook pushed the game to OT with a Michael Mannino 23-yard field goal with 42 seconds left in the fourth quarter, the fourth score of a wild final frame. Mannino hit a 44-yarder in the first overtime. Villanova needed five plays to win it, after McQuaide converted a third-and-15 to Lucas Kopecky.

Villanova went up 17-14 on the first play of the fourth quarter when McQuaide hit Luke Colella for a 10-yard score. Stony Brook surged ahead on Roland Dempster’s 1-yard run five minutes later. McQuaide found Colella for 21 yards to give the Wildcats a 24-21 edge with 2:49 remaining.

McQuaide also hit Braden Reed with a 37-yard score in the first quarter. He was 18-for-30 for 280 yards and four scores. Isaiah Ragland rushed 15 times for 97 yards, Ja’briel Mace 19 times for 68. Reed led the receiving corps with three catches for 91 yards.

Christian Sapp forced and recovered a fumble. Shane Hartzell had 2.5 tackles for loss among his 10 stops.
