Community Arts Market Makes Reading Feel Like the Heart of the Home

from Barrio Alegría

More than a dozen local artists are selling their wares, taking commissions, performing live, and even tattooing clients at Barrio Alegría’s annual My Mother’s Refrigerator arts market.

My Mother’s Refrigerator will be held on Saturday, Dec. 7, from noon to 3 p.m., at the WCR Center for The Arts, 140 N. 5th St., Reading. The market features a wide variety of arts and goods that will make unique holiday gifts.

Katherine Acosta leads Barrio’s creative placekeeping department and said the event is a way to put small businesses and independent artists in the forefront at a time when so many box stores are at the center of holiday shopping.

“We want to help the small entrepreneurs engage with the community so they can sell their work,” Acosta said. “The community can enjoy the different activities we’re having at the event; it is so exciting because they’re having some fun, meeting other people from the community, and buying gifts for friends and families.”

Anthony Orozco, Barrio’s director of operations, said the market is a unique chance for art lovers to snatch up some amazing pieces.

“If you love visual art, wear handmade garments, or need a new tattoo, this is the only market where you’re going to find what you’re looking for,” Orozco said. “The collection of art for sale is touching, provocative, unexpected, and hilarious.”

Artists will sell jewelry, paintings, clothing, poetry, and more. Barrio continues to update its social media channels with individual flyers for all of the artists participating in the event.

Barrio does not charge artists to participate in the market, giving artists a hundred percent of the profits made during the event.

Light fare and refreshments will be provided to attendees of the market.
