Concert previews of Kurt Vile, Liz Phair, Ice Kills Nine and In This Moment [Seven in Seven]

Welcome to Seven in Seven, where we look at shows coming to the region over the next week. As always, whether your musical tastes are rock ’n’ roll, jazz, heavy metal, R&B, singer-songwriter or indie, there will always be something to check out.

Here are seven of the best on the docket for the week of Nov. 17:

Kurt Vile — Saturday at Miller Symphony Hall

To celebrate this Friday’s release of his new EP, “Back to Moon Beach,” Kurt Vile is playing a hometown-ish show in Allentown at Miller Symphony Hall. Clocking in at just shy of an hour, this would be a long full-length record by most any other artist’s yardstick, but for Vile, the collection is an expression of just how deep his well of non-album material runs. Coming on the heels of his 2022 album, “Watch My Moves,” the EP culls together new songs, one-offs, covers and newly reworked versions of beloved tracks. And while he’ll be back on the road next spring for a proper tour, this show will be the only local appearance of the Landsdowne native and final scheduled performance of the year.

Wednesday 13 — Saturday at Mickey’s Black Box

The porch pumpkins may have all rotted out by now, but we can still consider it Halloween season — right? Let’s hope so, because the Duke of Spook, Wednesday13, is coming to Lancaster this weekend to celebrate 21 years of his former group, the glam punk icons Murderdolls. His current band, which features Murderdolls alumni Roman Surman and Jack Tankersley, will perform a full set of Murderdolls songs taken from the band’s 2002 debut album, “Beyond the Valley of the Murderdolls,” and their 2010 sophomore album, “Women and Children Last.”

Andrew McMahon — Saturday at Harrisburg Midtown Arts Center and Wednesday, Nov. 22, at The Fillmore

After leading pop punk outfit Something Corporate to chart success in the early 2000s, Andrew McMahon soon resurfaced with the more personal solo project Jack’s Mannequin. He then released numerous hook-packed albums under his name using the moniker Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness. In 2006, following his battle with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia, he launched the Dear Jack Foundation, which provides programming to benefit adolescents and young adults diagnosed with cancer. Through it all, the East Coast-born, SoCal-based singer and musical collaborator has created a stunning catalog of introspective, impossibly catchy piano pop. His enthralling new project, “Tilt at the Wind No More,” is the latest example of his immeasurable staying power, seeing him dive deep into nostalgia in some of the best ways imaginable. Lucky for us, he’s doing two regional dates with a show in Harrisburg on Saturday and next Wednesday in Philly.

The Lighthouse and The Whaler — Sunday at MilkBoy

The story of Cleveland, Ohio’s The Lighthouse and The Whaler is one of perseverance and determination blended with personal, cumulative growth and maturity. Formed by Michael LoPresti in 2008, the band quickly gained momentum with their 2012 album, “This Is an Adventure,” helping them break onto the national scene. The group spent much of 2013 touring and the next year writing what would become their next full-length record, “Mont Royal.” Their single “I Want To Feel Alive” would go on to amass over 10 million streams, as critical reception intensified. Cut to present day with a new EP released this summer, “Water Walker,” as the band continues to add to their already impressive list of song placements in shows like “Grey’s Anatomy,” “American Idol” and the trailer for Disney’s “Christopher Robin.”

Ghost of Vroom — Sunday at The Foundry

Ghost of Vroom, the acclaimed band comprised of veteran singer-songwriter Mike Doughty — best known from Soul Coughing — bassist Andrew “Scrap” Livingston and drummer Madden Klass, are wrapping up the 2023 dates of their biggest headline tour thus far in Philly at The Foundry. The run is in support of their latest album, “Ghost of Vroom 3,” which collects a dozen new tracks built upon hard-hitting drums, eclectic hooks and Doughty’s signature brand of lyrically dexterous art-pop.

Liz Phair — Wednesday, Nov. 22, at Franklin Music Hall

An 18-track double album loosely framed as a song-by-song reply to The Rolling Stones’ “Exile on Main St.,” Liz Phair’s “Exile in Guyville” was dubbed a classic upon arrival in 1993. The album’s profile has only risen in the ensuing years, now rightly regarded as an iconic work and a feminist landmark, making it a no-brainer for the one-time indie darling to perform it in its entirety — along with some additional hits — for its 30th anniversary. Phair is doing the LP with the backing of a full band for the tour, which sees her headlining some of the largest venues of her career.

Ice Nine Kills + In This Moment — Wednesday, Nov. 22, at Santander Arena

Prepare for a night of sonic sorcery and hellacious horror as two of the most other-worldly forces in modern metal, Ice Nine Kills and In This Moment, bring the “Kiss of Death Tour” to Reading next week. The two bands — alongside special guests Avatar and New Years Day — have joined forces to bring their respective highly acclaimed live shows to a whole new level. Visionary trailblazers and multimedia raconteurs Ice Nine Kills have built a thrilling world for a growing legion of devoted true believers, with theatrical shows, high-concept videos and inventive band-to-fan communion that truly comes alive in person. In This Moment have been presiding over a diehard fan base under the watch of “mother” figure and frontwoman Maria Brink, quietly emerging as one of the most impactful bands of the 21st century with over 1.3 billion cumulative streams to date.
