Conrad Weiser beats Wyomissing to win 2nd straight District 3 Class 2A girls tennis team title

The Conrad Weiser girls tennis team experienced another championship celebration when it returned to Robesonia Wednesday.

But the formula that led to that ride on the fire engine was a little different this year, according to coach Ryan Knarr.

The Scouts defeated Wyomissing for the second straight year in the District 3 Class 2A team final, carried by the play of their No. 2 and No. 3 singles players in a 3-1 victory at Hershey Racquet Club.

“It came down to our singles players stepping up,” Knarr said. “Michelle Timothy (at No. 2) and Victoria Waltz (at No. 3) came through in the big moments. They’ve been there and they’ve been in championship matches before. They’ve been in big moments. They rose to the occasion on an elite level and led us to the championship.”

Timothy defeated Elise Wang 6-1, 6-4 and Waltz beat Kathryn Masano 7-5, 6-0 to help the top-seeded Berks champion Scouts (16-0) sweep the singles.

Weiser sophomore and two-time Berks singles champ Emma Perkins got a win by injury default at No. 1 as Wyomissing’s Aly Saad, as expected, was unable to play.

At doubles, Ananya Rai and Hadley Lynch of third-seeded Wyomissing (14-3) led Isabel Wiggins and Lydia Bashore 6-4, 2-6, 4-2 at No. 1. when Weiser clinched the match.

At No. 2 doubles, Wyomissing’s Charlotte Reedy and Cece Banco defeated Emily McGonigle and Gracie McMahon 6-1, 6-0.

“You know that when you’re trying to win a championship, you’re going to have to face Wyomissing along the way,” Knarr said of the Spartans, who won the last of their 15 district titles in 2018. “We’ve been able to face that challenge and reach the peak here.”

The trip to a district final was the fourth straight for the Scouts. They lost in 2018 and ’19 in Class 3A to perennial power Manheim Township, which won its 21st title Wednesday by beating Cumberland Valley 3-2.

Next up for Weiser and Wyomissing is the PIAA Girls Tennis Team Championships, which start Tuesday.

The Scouts will play the District 4 runner-up; the Spartans will take on the District 6 champion.

While Knarr was talking about this latest title, he couldn’t help but glance at the future. He mentioned that 30 kids are signed up for a middle school after-school program on Thursday.

“All the players you see on the court for us have been through that process,” he said. “It’s a reflection on our program, our coaches, our school and our community.

“It’s a real culture here that we’ve built. It’s something really special that our community and our school district can be very proud of.”
