Conrad Weiser, Wyomissing advance to semis in District 3 Class 2A team tennis

Defending champion Conrad Weiser and Wyomissing earned victories Wednesday to advance to the Class 2A semifinals in the District 3 Girls Tennis Team Championships.

Top-seeded Conrad Weiser defeated No. 8 seed Lancaster Catholic 3-0 and No. 3 Wyomissing downed No. 6 Camp Hill 3-2.

In Monday’s semifinals at Hershey Racquet Club, Conard Weiser (14-0) will face No. 4 Kennard-Dale (11-1) at 2 p.m. and Wyomissing (13-2) will play No. 2 Trinity (16-1) at 3:30 p.m. The championship and third-place matches will be on Wednesday, Oct. 20.

In the other quarterfinals, Trinity beat No. 7 West York 3-1, and Kennard-Dale beat No. 5 Lancaster Country Day 3-0.

Conrad Weiser won the matchup of the last two Class 2A champions with victories by Michelle Timothy at No. 2 singles, Victoria Waltz at No. 3 singles and Isabel Wiggins and Lydia Bashore at No. 1 singles.

Two-time Berks champion Emma Perkins led returning District 3 Class 2A singles champion Anna Millen 6-2, 3-1 when the match was stopped because Weiser had clinched the victory. The Scouts’ team of Emily McGonigle and Gracie McMahon also led at No. 2 doubles.

Wyomissing got victories from Elise Wang at No. 2 singles, Ananya Rai and Anna Lentz at No. 1 doubles, and Charlotte Reedy and Cece Banco at No. 2 doubles.

Neither Perkins nor Berks singles runner-up Judith Manta of Muhlenberg will play singles in the District 3 Tournament. The draws for Class 2A and Class 3A were released on Wednesday and neither of the county’s top two players entered the tournament that begins on Friday.

Instead, they will play in the District 3 Doubles Championships that will start Friday, Oct. 22.

Judith Manta teamed with her sister, Jen, to win the Berks doubles championship over Perkins and Timothy. Last year, Perkins teamed with Alex Pancu to win the District 3 and PIAA Class 2A doubles championships.

Perkins and Timothy will compete in 2A, while the Manta sisters will compete in 3A.

Four Berks players qualified for the 2A singles draw and two qualified in Class 3A.

In 2A, Hamburg’s Mia Gassert is the No. 3 seed and will face Lancaster County Day’s Maggie Auman in the round of 16.

Elise Wang of Wyomissing will face Millen, the defending champion and No. 1 seed, Sierra Smart of Kutztown will play Sarah Steckbeck of Lancaster Mennonite and Abby Schnatz of Berks Catholic will play Sadie Reig of Trinity.

In Class 3A, Reading High’s Ashley Retana will play No. 3 seed 3 Anya Rosenbach of New Oxford and Exeter’s Anya Whitman will play Red Lion’s Lexi Lakatosh.

The first two rounds are Friday at Hershey Racquet Club. The semifinals and finals are scheduled for Saturday.
