Conrad Weiser’s Emma Perkins and Michelle Timothy advanced to the doubles semifinals in Class 2A at the PIAA Girls Tennis Championships with a pair of wins Friday at Hershey Racquet Club.
Perkins and Timothy, the District 3 champs, defeated District 4 runners-up Anna Hall and Mia Blas of Loyalsock 6-0, 6-0 in the first round, then beat District 7 runners-up Kirsten Close and Roshni Thakka of Sewickley Academy 6-0, 7-5 in the quarterfinals.
They will face Riverside’s Madeline Defaber-Schumacher and Bella Aniska, the District 2 champs, in today’s semifinals at 10:30 a.m. at Hershey Racquet Club. The final is at 3:30 p.m.
Perkins, a sophomore, is going for her second straight doubles gold medal. She teamed with then-senior Alex Pancu to win a year ago.
The team of Perkins and Timothy, a senior, is the only Berks entry still alive going into the event’s second day.
In Class 3A doubles, sisters Judith Manta and Jen Manta of Muhlenberg, the Berks and District 3 champs, defeated Moon’s District 7 third-place team of Maria Lounder and Amanda Korn 6-2, 6-1 in the first round before falling to Conestoga’s Leena Kwak and Ananya Krishnan 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinals. Kwak and Krishnan are the District 1 runners-up.
In Class 2A doubles, Wyomissing’s Elise Wang and Ananya Rai, the third-place team from District 3, lost 6-0, 6-0 in the first round to Knoch’s Emily Greb and Lindsey Greb, the District 7 champs.
In Class 2A singles, Hamburg freshman Mia Gassert, the District 3 runner-up, fell to South Williamsport’s Olivia Dorner, the District 4 champ, 6-1, 6-0 in the first round.
