Coroner called to 2-alarm fire in Shillington [update]

Fire crews were dispatched Saturday night to a house fire at 38 Philadelphia Ave., Shillington, with possible entrapment.

The dispatch was shortly before 6 p.m., and fire crews quickly asked for a second alarm.

Smoke was visible from a distance, officials said.

First crews on the scene confirmed a working fire and entrapment, according to emergency reports.

As firefighters gained the upper hand they were able to get into the building and found someone deceased on the second floor, according to emergency reports.

Acting Berks County Coroner Jonn M. Hollenbach said his office was called to the scene shortly before 7:30.

Philadelphia Avenue, also known as Route 724, is closed.
