County of Berks Reopens Stonecliffe Recreation Area and Union Canal Activity Trail

From County of Berks

The County of Berks is pleased to announce the reopening of the Stonecliffe Recreation Area following the completion of the City of Reading’s Stonecliffe Phase 1 Sewer Force Main Project, effective the afternoon on Wednesday, Nov. 5. The adjoining section of the Union Canal/Schuylkill River Trail is also fully open. Visitors to the park should use the newly reopened Columbia Street Parking Lot.

The Berks County Parks and Recreation Department has prepared the site for reopening; however, the Stonecliffe Action Park skatepark will remain closed as the County evaluates future renovations to the skatepark.

Residents should be aware that the City of Reading has moved into Phase 2 of the 19th Ward Pump Station Project at Stonecliffe. This phase has resulted in the closure of the Monroe Street Parking Lot. Additionally, the concrete fishing pier at the park is closed due to the removal of Bushong’s Dam in September 2025. After the dam was removed, the water level and course of the Tulpehocken Creek were altered. The fishing dock at the pier no longer reaches the water and has been closed for the safety of all visitors. The County is reviewing options for new water access in this area.

The County appreciates the community’s patience and understanding as it completes work to restore and improve Stonecliffe Recreation Area, the Action Park skatepark, and the fishing pier for the safety and enjoyment of all visitors.
