Cressona Legion getting ready for Memorial Day

Cressona’s annual Memorial Day parade is scheduled for Monday, May 27. The parade will be forming at Hydro at 9 a.m. and will start at 9:30, ending at Cressona American Legion Plaza with a ceremony.

After the parade and ceremony, both of which are hosted by The Cressona American Legion Post 286 family, refreshments will be available inside the Post 286 canteen.

Anyone interested in participating in the parade and/or ceremony should email unit286cressona@gmail.com or stop in Post 286 during normal business hours (Open at 4 p.m. Monday-Friday and 3 p.m. on weekends.

Service scheduled

Legion members will conduct a service prior to the parade. It will be held around 7:30 a.m. at the Cressona Cemetery. Anyone is welcome to attend and observe this annual event.

Donations sought

In preparation for Memorial Day, Cressona American Legion Auxiliary is looking for girls interested in gathering donations for poppies and being the 2024 Poppy Queen or Little Miss Poppy representing the post. For information or to sign someone up, email unit286cressona@gmail.com .The earlier you sign up the more donations you could gather.

Deadline to sign up is May 17, and all donations must be turned in before May 25 at 6 p.m. The winner will be formally announced at the ceremony after the parade, and all entrants are encouraged to participate in the parade.

Legion officials are urging the public to support veterans and our military by donating any amount you can for a poppy and wear it with pride.

Don’t throw out flags

If you have any American flags that are torn, tattered or weathered, do not throw them away like a piece of garbage. Drop them off at Cressona American Legion, which has an outdoor dropoff box for American flags. The flags will get the proper treatment at the legion’s fourth annual Flag Retirement Ceremony on Saturday, June 15.
