Crews called to I-78 in northern Berks for multivehicle accident

Emergency crews were dispatched Tuesday night to Interstate 78 in Tilden Township for a multivehicle accident with multiple entrapments.

The crash in the eastbound lanes shortly after 8:15 involved several injuries. The interstate was closed in both directions.

Several ambulances were called to the scene.

One of the vehicles involved was a school bus, according to emergency reports. Another vehicle was a tractor-trailer hauling toothpaste and the third was a passenger vehicle, according to reports.

Subsequent emergency reports were that four people were entrapped.

Soon the extrication process turned into a large-scale operation.

By 9 p.m., crews had freed some of the trapped occupants and at least one person was believed to be dead. All of the passengers were pulled from the wreckage by 9:20 p.m.

The bus was not from Pennsylvania, according to emergency reports at the scene.

There were other crashes in the traffic mess created by the main accident.

One of them was in the westbound lanes of I-78 near the Hamburg exit involving a tractor-trailer that ripped at least a portion of the roof off a car.

One person was hurt in that crash, according to emergency reports.

The investigation into the crash and removal of the wreckage was expected to take hours. Traffic was being detoured off I-78 and causing the usual tie-ups on side roads.
