Crews contain brush fire that threatened homes in southeastern Berks

Fire crews fought a fast-moving brush fire Monday in Birdsboro that spread to sheds and threatened nearby residences, according to emergency reports.

Multiple calls about 2:50 p.m. reported a brush fire at Cocalico and Douglas Street.

The fire quickly spread up a hill and moved toward homes in the Brooke Mansion development.

Flames engulfed two sheds and moved close to several homes along the 300 block of Washington Street, reports said.

Crews staged in two locations: At Cocalico Road and Douglas Street, and off of Washington Street, with multiple engines, utility vehicles and ATVs called to the scene.

Fire police shut down Cocalico Road and Washington Street in the area of the fire.

The fire was placed under control with extensive overhaul about 4 p.m.

The blaze was reportedly contained before it spread to any homes.
