Crews respond to 3 accidents in Berks County

Fire and ambulance crews responded to three crashes late Saturday and early Sunday in Berks County.

• The first crash about 9 p.m. Saturday closed Route 100 for more than 90 minutes.

State police said Amy L. Persing, 48, Catasauqua, was northbound near Passmore Road and began a turn across the southbound lane.

Her SUV collided with an oncoming SUV driven by Pierce J. Hoyle, 23, Barto, troopers said.

A passenger in Persing’s vehicle, Emily S. White, 21, Catasauqua, was transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest for unspecified injuries, troopers said.

Between the two vehicles, there were five occupants, and all wore seat belts, troopers said.

• A two-vehicle crash shortly after midnight closed the southbound lanes of Route 61 at the Interstate 78 overpass in Tilden Township.

Crews responded to free a trapped driver, according to emergency reports. It was unclear how long the southbound lanes were closed.

Further details were not yet available.

• About 45 minutes later, crews responded for a vehicle that took out a utility pole on State Street near Tower Road in Longswamp Township.

State police said that Mason H. Herb, 20, Mertztown, lost control of his westbound car, which went off the road, sheared the pole and ran into two mailboxes and damaged a yard.

Troopers said that Herb and his passenger, Emily A. Logar, 20, Blandon, were not hurt, and added that both wore seat belts.
