Hundreds took part in rallies Saturday night to protest the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, the 1973 ruling that established a constitutional right to abortion.
Around 200 people participated in a Penn Square rally organized by activist group Berks Stands Up. More than 300 turned out for a similar event in Kutztown, according to organizer Karen Feridun.
Feridun said one young woman in Kutztown spoke of turning 16 on the day the Supreme Court stripped her of her right to make decisions about her own body. Another woman, nearly 80, told the crowd she was pleased to see so many young women turn out. Marilyn Fox wore the pin her husband wore nearly 50 years ago when he attended an abortion rights protest and expressed disbelief at finding herself needing to wear it now. Many expressed rage at the decision. Speaker Arabel Elliott warned that the overturning of Roe is just the beginning, as the Supreme Court is likely to take on other rights.
“Many of the speakers noted the importance of voting,” said Feridun,” but voting is not enough at this point. We need to be organizing. We need to be relentless. Tonight was just the beginning.”
