Dogs, cats from tornado-ravaged Kentucky brought to Reading for adoption

The Freedom Center for Animal Life-Saving, 1801 N. 11th St., Reading, a Humane Pennsylvania shelter formerly known as the Humane Society of Berks County, has received 19 animals from the Kentucky Humane Society in Louisville to be adopted in Berks County.

Kentucky Humane Society was coordinating efforts to rehome shelter animals throughout the state after portions were hit by five devastating tornadoes Friday, Dec. 10. The state also was hit by several more lesser-strength tornadoes.

Staff from the Reading shelter met a transport convoy at Brandywine Valley SPCA in West Chester to pick up nine dogs and 10 cats.

Karel Minor, president and CEO of Humane Pennsylvania, said Tuesday his organization was contacted through transport partners to help find homes for the animals.

All animals will be available for adoption after a thorough assessment and a period of quarantine, said Ronai Rivera, media specialist for Humane Pennsylvania, in an email.

“We have to check these animals out for health and make sure they are vaccinated and sterilized,” Minor said.

Minor said interested adopters should watch Humane Pennsylvania’s website, humanepa.org and its social media pages for when the animal become available to adopt.

“This is one of those situations where the animals that are in the worst-hit places, the shelters are devastated too,” Minor said.

Minor said Humane Pennsylvania is prepared to take in more animals, if asked.

“We are right now in the middle of an adoption initiative, so we are adopting them out fairly rapidly, so we have some space,” Minor said. “The faster we can move them out, the faster we can take more if it is needed.

“The reason we help out folks in this situation is we want to be ready to have people help us out when something happens.”
