Emma Perkins to face Judith Manta for Berks girls tennis title

Defending champion Emma Perkins of Conrad Weiser will face Muhlenberg freshman Judith Manta for the BCIAA Girls Tennis Flight 1 singles championship.

Perkins and Manta earned straight-sets wins Saturday to advance to Monday’s championship match at 2:30 p.m. at Muhlenberg. It will be the third meeting of the season between Perkins and Manta, with Perkins winning the first two.

Perkins, who won the championship last season as a freshman, downed Anya Whitman of Exeter 6-0, 6-1 in a crossover semifinal match. Manta defeated Mia Gassert of Hamburg 6-4, 6-2 in the other semifinal.

Perkins defeated Manta in three sets in Conrad Weiser’s regular season win over Muhlenberg on Sept. 9. Perkins also defeated Manta in a second-set tiebreaker on Monday to clinch Conrad Weiser’s third straight title in the BCIAA Girls Tennis Team Tournament championship match.

Those are Manta’s only two losses this season. Perkins is undefeated.

Haniska Kunduru of Exeter and Hailey Guerrero of Reading High will meet for the Flight 2 singles titles.

Guerrero’s twin sister, Hallie Guerrero, will play Conrad Weiser’s Victoria Waltz for the Flight 3 title.

In Flight 4, Reading’s Valeria Sanchez will play Wyomissing’s Kathryn Masono. In Flight 5 it will be be Conrad Weiser’s Lydia Bashore vs. Wyomissing’s Ananya Rai.

The doubles championship matches will follow the singles title matches.

Perkins, who teamed with then-senior Alex Pancu last year to win the Flight 1 doubles title, is back in the final again this season with Michelle Timothy. They will take on Judith Manta and her sister, Jen, a junior.

The Flight 2 doubles championship match will feature Waltz and Conrad Weiser teammate Isabel Wiggins against Rai and Wyomissing teammate Charlotte Reedy.
