Exeter couple injured in overnight home fire

An Exeter Township couple were taken to Reading Hospital after being awakened by smoke from a fire in their home early this morning.

Exeter Township Fire Department was dispatched about 3:50 a.m. to the 200 block of Bordic Road in the mobile home park off Lincoln Road.

No flames were visible in the mobile home when the first crew arrived, and the occupants were outside suffering from smoke inhalation and burns, Fire Chief Christopher Bickings said.

They were treated at the scene by emergency medical personnel and taken by ambulance to Reading Hospital. Information on their conditions was unavailable.

Bickings said the woman helped her husband out of the home after being awakened by smoke.

Firefighters put out the fire within 10 minutes, containing the flames to the room where it originated except for some extension to the hallway, the chief said. The room was designed as a bedroom but appeared to function as an office, he said.

The home was equipped with smoke detectors, but Bickings wasn’t sure if they were functional at the time of the fire.

A state police fire marshal is working with the township fire marshal to determine the cause.

The home will require extensive interior repairs before it can be reoccupied, Bickings said.

A damage estimate was unavailable.
