Exeter’s offense was dominant in the opening round of the district playoffs on Friday night.
The seventh-seeded Eagles passed for 206 yards and ran for 190 on their way to a 38-21 win over 10th-seeded South Western in the first round of the District 3 Class 5A playoffs in Reiffton.
Exeter advances to the quarterfinals and will play No. 2 seed Manheim Central next Friday on the road. The Barons had a first-round bye.
“Great effort,” Eagles coach Matt Bauer said. “They played hard. They wanted it.”
Exeter never trailed, jumping to a 20-0 lead early in the second quarter. The Mustangs cut it to 20-14 in the third quarter, but never took the lead.
Eric Nangle ran for a touchdown and Colin Payne threw a TD pass to Joey Schlaffer to make it 14-0 after a quarter. Payne then connected with Carson Schmidt on another touchdown pass to make it 20-0.
After South Western cut it to 20-14, Mike Moser made a 31-yard field goal, Payne hit Schmidt for another TD and Ty Yocum ran for a touchdown to make it 38-14.
