Exeter dominates West York for 42-0 win in high school football

YORK — It didn’t take long for Exeter to begin to remove the bad feelings of a tough loss.

But Exeter coach Matt Bauer doesn’t want his players to quickly forget how they felt prior to Saturday night’s 42-0, non-league win over West York.

The Eagles dominated from the start, going 57 yards on six runs by Eric Nangle to take the lead less than three minutes into the game.

“After last week it really left a bad taste in our mouths,” Bauer said. “We don’t want to have those bad tastes any more. We’re just going to try to continue to build off this and get better from week to week, regardless of our opponent.”

The Eagles (3-2) bounced back from a disappointing 17-14 loss to Hempfield from eight days earlier with a dominant defense.

Exeter intercepted four passes, had 13 tackles for loss and a blocked punt. Kellen Boyer, Jacob Wolfe, Ty Yocum and Zach Zandler all had interceptions.

Yocum’s pick set up his own 10-yard touchdown run. Wolfe later returned a punt 51 yards for a touchdown as the Eagles outplayed the Bulldogs (0-4) in every phase of the game.

“This was evaluation about us, it didn’t matter who we were playing,” Bauer said. “We had a lot of things to correct. I think we corrected a lot of them. I think we still have a lot to correct.

“It’s been a long week for these kids. I’m just happy to get this thing rolling back in the right direction.”

Exeter also got touchdowns on a 26-yard run by Cabraun Woody, a 14-yard pass from Colin Payne to J.R. Strauss and a recovered blocked punt in the end zone by Anthony Caccese.

It was more than enough for the Eagles to rid the bad tastes from their mouths after losing a game they had led by 14 points.

But Bauer emphasized he didn’t want them to remove that memory from their minds.

“I don’t want them to get over it,” Bauer said. “I told them I don’t want them to forget how that felt. That was an awful feeling.”
