Hartford 5, Reading 4

Game recap: The Yard Goats scored five runs in the first inning and held on to defeat the Fightin Phils in the finale of a six-game series at Dunkin’ Donuts Park.

Reading starter Francisco Morales (3-13) lasted just two-thirds of an inning. He allowed five runs, four earned, on three hits while walking three. Two of the walks came with the bases loaded.

The Reading bullpen blanked the Yard Goats over the final 7 1/3 innings while the offense chipped away.

Matt Joyce, on a rehab assignment, was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the third to bring in Reading’s first run. Chris Cornelius hit a two-run homer in the fourth, his first, to close it to 5-3.

Grenny Cumana hit an RBI double in the seventh to make it a one-run game but Reading couldn’t score the equalizer.

Zach Matson (2-1), Hartford’s fourth pitcher, went the final 2 2/3 scoreless innings to earn the win. He allowed two hits while striking out two.

Cumana, Matt Kroon and Luke Miller all had two hits for Reading.

On deck: After a 12-game road trip, the Fightin Phils have Monday off before returning to FirstEnergy Stadium to face the New Hampshire Fisher Cats Tuesday at 7:05 p.m.
