Flash flood watch in effect for Berks County starting Thursday afternoon

A flash flood watch is in effect for Berks County and the region starting Thursday afternoon as an outbreak of showers and thunderstorms is expected ahead of a vigorous cool front.

The National Weather Service-issued watch starts Thursday at 2 p.m. and ends Friday at 8 a.m.

The Mount Holly, N.J., office issued this statement: “The heaviest rain will fall across the Lehigh Valley and southern Poconos and into northern New Jersey, though a period of heavy rain will extend down the I-95 corridor.

“Storm total rainfall from Thursday morning through midday Friday will range from 2-3 inches in the southern Poconos and Lehigh Valley, and 1.5-2.5 inches across northern New Jersey
down the I-95 corridor towards Philadelphia. Generally 1-1.5 inches elsewhere. There is the potential for over 3 inches in Carbon and Monroe counties.”

The monthly rainfall total at Reading Regional Airport, the official weather service site in Berks, is 6.97 inches for September. The No. 10 September all-time for rainfall is 7.74 inches.

The potential for the rainfall this week could easily place this month among the rainiest 10 Septembers.

The AccuWeather forecast is for a high in the mid-70s Thursday in the rain, followed by storms in the evening.

The skies are expected to clear Friday with a chilly west wind turning northwest and ushering in a low Saturday morning near 50 degrees, likely the coldest air since the end of May.

Then the forecast shows mostly sunny skies and highs near 70 degrees on Saturday and Sunday with not-quite-as-chilly morning lows.

The long-range forecast shows more rain will be in the forecast for Sept. 29-30.
